Partners For Peace is part of a collective effort in Monterey County to support the mental health and wellness of our LGBTQIA+ students. Rainbow Connections is a $7.8 million MHSA Innovations Project designed to interconnect youth serving systems with community-based organizations through relationship and create conditions to cultivate environments of belonging for LGBTQ+ youth across home, school and community settings.
Partners for Peace is collaborating with the Family Acceptance Project® (FAP) to provide education and guidance to help parents, families and caregivers to support LGBTQ+ children and youth. As a Rainbow Connections partner, we support families of LGBTQ+ youth through the following services:
Family Acceptance Project® is the first research, education and family support program to help diverse families learn to support their LGBTQ children. FAP did the first research on LGBTQ youth and families which showed that how parents, families and caregivers respond to their LGBTQ children impacts their health risks and well-being. FAP’s research and family support model are grounded in the lived experiences of Latino LGBTQ youth, young adults and families, including with LGBTQ youth and families in Monterey County. FAP has used this research to develop the first family support model to help racially, culturally and religiously diverse families to learn how to support their LGBTQ children to strengthen their family and to decrease their children’s risk for depression, substance abuse, suicide, homelessness and sexual health risks. FAP meets families where they are and provides education and support for families in the context of their cultural and religious backgrounds. We are working with FAP to provide family support groups, education and information to support LGBTQ young people and families across our community.
The Rainbow Connections FSP supports parents/caregivers of
LGBTQ+ youth and applies research-based evidence from The Family Acceptance Project © on positive behaviors that create strong and healthy family units. Supports provided aim to reduce the health and mental health risks for LGBTQ+ youth that are associated with rejecting behaviors.
